Chips on a car's windscreen should be repaired as soon as possible by a professional to prevent them from spreading into cracks, which compromise the glass's structural integrity and require a more expensive replacement.
Repairs typically involve filling the chip with resin, restoring its strength and appearance, and are only possible if the damage is small (often less than a £1 coin) and located outside the driver's critical line of sight.
Why repairs are important?
- Structural integrity: The windscreen provides a significant portion of a car's structural strength, and any damage, no matter how small, weakens it.
- Preventing cracks: A chip can easily spread into a longer, more complex crack, especially from driving over rough roads or due to temperature changes.
- Cost and time savings: Repairing a small chip is much quicker and cheaper than replacing the entire windscreen.
Windscreen repair and MOT regulations
- Zone A: Any chip or crack over 10mm in this area will result in an MOT failure.
- Zone B: The remainder of the swept area of the windscreen. Damage up to 40mm in this zone is acceptable, but anything larger will cause a failure.
- Other areas: Anywhere else on the windscreen, damage larger than 40mm can lead to an MOT failure.
- ADAS area: A separate zone exists for the cameras and sensors used by Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). No repairs can be done in this area, and the windscreen will likely need replacing if damage occurs here.
- Repair before MOT: It is crucial to have any damage in Zone A or any other area that is larger than the allowed size repaired before an MOT test to ensure the vehicle passes.
